DESCRIPTION from Thierry Lalo
The general idea of this workshop is to provide singers a good occasion to experiment the collective pleasure of choir singing within the frame of what is generally called “swing”, “groove” – or any kind of related “rhythmic feeling”. We will work in a rather rigorous and concentrated way, like any jazz group, but also in a very relaxed atmosphere, focusing on some key topics: how to achieve a nice blend for the group; how and when to produce a “laid back” feeling (singing slightly after the rhythm section); how to “create” swing feel through adequate accents and phrasing; how to develop harmonic consciousness, listening to other lines in the choir; how to keep connected to the rhythm section while singing; etc. We will do only the best that we can within the time we have and never feel pressure, so we will aim at “having fun doing well”!
The repertoire will be based on my own arrangements and compositions for choir and rhythm section (plus maybe one a cappella piece). It will be a patchwork of (mostly) arrangements on jazz standards, and one (or two) original compositions of mine, based on French poems. I will be seeking to feed the group with various atmospheres and lyrics.
At some point we hope that the singers will feel as if they were truly part of a big band sometimes! In some other cases, they will be surrounded by nice or soft sounds designed to serve a beautiful text or a nice jazz piece. There will be open space for written or improvised solos. Some parts in some arrangements are a bit more difficult, but basically each line is harmonically and melodically logical, therefore quite natural to hear and memorize with a bit of work.
