The Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a remarkable building. After the glorious consecration ceremony of the church in 1891, attended by the country’s bishops and the Apostolic King József Ferenc I, the papers in Budapest wrote: “If you want to see heaven, come to Pécs.” Its current form came about from the 19th century reconstruction works; this considered transformation kept the magical atmosphere of the medieval Cathedral.
The magnificent baldachin main altar further enhances the immense space, by dividing it into two halves by the monumental arch as we enter. The choir can boast of a four-manual organ with over 6000 pipes, a masterpiece from the renowned Angster Organ Factory in Pécs. The Chapels of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Corpus Christi are decorated by Karoly Lotz seccos. Additionally, we can observe the world famous Bertalan Székely seccos in both the Chapel of Mary and in the chapel of Saint Mór. The mortal remains of Janus Pannonius, a well-known Humanist poet and a former Bishop of Pécs, were rediscovered and then reburied during archaeological excavations in the enormous 12th century, cross-vaulted, five-nave crypt. A sculpture was erected in his memory at the same spot. There is a stunning view of the city from the south-eastern tower of the time-honoured cathedral, which has preserved the spirit of its thousand-year-old past so well.
The Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim
The Parish Church of Gyertyaszentelő Boldogasszony in the city centre of Pécs is an unequalled Ottoman monument of our country, the most important example of Turkish-Islamic architecture in Hungary. A pleasant, greenish-yellow light illuminates the church’s interior through the hive patterned, arched windows. You can admire the finely decorated mihrab (praying niche), which faces Mecca and you can also discover some calligraphic lines from the Koran scattered on the walls. Right next to the vestry, there are two vessels that had previously been used in the bath of Pasha Gazi Kassim and now serve as containers for holy water. Visitors can wander around this enchanting building where the East meets the West, this sacred place where different religions interact, by using modern equipment, exciting interactive elements and animations. Thus, in the church that is considered to be the symbol of Pécs, we can get acquainted with the history of the edifice and its changing appearance throughout the past.
Zsolnay Museum
The collection which displays the most significant pieces of the Zsolnay Ceramic Factory is exhibited in the oldest dwelling-house of Pécs. The Zsolnay family were perceptive and their experimental nature in historical and Art Nouveau styles made them successful at many fairs and exhibitions all over the world (Vienna, Paris, London, Milan, California etc.) Numerous buildings belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were also decorated with Zsolnay tiles. The most famous invention of the factory was the creation of ’eosin’, a metallic shiny glaze on ceramics.
The Golden Age of Zsolnay – László Gyugyi’s collection
The most beautiful ceramics representing the golden age of the Zsolnays wait for the visitors in the renovated Sikorski Villa in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. The unique 600-piece collection represents a magnificent introduction to the ceramics from the periods of Historicism and Art Nouveau.
Vasarely Museum
The exhibition that commemorates the world-famous, Pécs-born artist Victor Vasarely (Győző Vásárhelyi, 1906-1997), who emigrated to France, contains several works of art from Bauhaus-style geometric graphics through early op-art works to black-white line works. The world-famous Zebra-works, the Dia-Argent and the huge wool carpet, the Line-Light are of high importance as part of the exhibition.
Medieval University

The Lapidarium
Sadly, only a few artefacts have remained intact from medieval and Renaissance Hungary. The Lapidarium has the most notable national collection of sculptures from these eras, especially showcasing the Cathedral’s carvings. It also exhibits the restoration works done to the church at different times, placing a special emphasis on the Romanesque period, when the Cathedral took its present appearance. The exhibition gives a comprehensive overview of the restored building’s beauty, its former wealth, and it helps us to grasp the concepts of the 19th century remodelling, as well as the aesthetic and theological principles of the day.
The Episcopal Treasury
The fine art exhibition presents unequalled pieces of art that had previously only been accessible to view by a privileged few for decades. The exhibits include a range of valuable works of art including paintings, graphics, etchings, sculptures, objects of gold- and silversmiths and numismatic relics of the episcopal collection of the Diocese of Pécs. This is where we can see the portrait of György Klimó and the significant Roman numismatic collection of this patron bishop. Previously on display in the Cathedral, the large series of paintings illustrating the life of Jesus by the Austrian born painter, Karl Atzger, in addition to a piece of art from both Hungarian painters, Bertalan Székely and Lajos Kubányi.
